“GEORGIA: On My Mind” (acrylic paint, oil/wax crayon, and pencil on heavy watercolor paper) reflects on Georgia’s central role in the nation’s political and social upheaval of 2020–21. The work brings together the killings of Ahmaud Arbery and Rayshard Brooks, the voter-mobilization efforts associated with Stacey Abrams, and the electoral victories of Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff. It also mourns the eight people killed in the 2021 Atlanta-area spa shootings, six of them women of Asian descent, while confronting the continued struggle over voting rights. Echoing the state’s Civil Rights-era history, the piece presents Georgia as a contested landscape where racial justice, democratic participation, grief, and collective action remain urgently intertwined.
