“IOWA: We Ban Books” (acrylic on heavy watercolor paper) confronts contemporary book censorship through the visual language of patriotic Americana. Against a classic civil library building, red-and-white stripes, stars, and the blunt declaration “We Ban Books” expose the contradiction between democratic ideals and restricting literature. Referencing The Handmaid’s Tale, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and writers Margaret Atwood, Alice Walker, and Stephen Chbosky, the work asks whose stories are considered dangerous—and what a culture loses when access to books is controlled.
